Olivia Wilde and her best friend Babs Burchfield have a long history of philanthropic and eco-friendly partnerships, ranging from volunteering together in Haiti over a decade ago to co-founding their collaborative initiative, Conscious Commerce. The next stylish venture for the benefactor duo? A holiday-ready accessory for the Starling sustainable jewelry line.
Launched today, the Starling Jewelry x Conscious Commerce Sundial Charm ($ 210- $ 540) uses all SCS-certified post-consumer materials, from 14k gold and sterling silver to the sparkling four diamonds. The coin comes with an inspirational card that reads, and yet she turned, which translates from French as “and yet it turns”.
“Our collaboration was mainly inspired by the feeling of seeing sustainability in a new way. Take everything we have learned in the past and follow the light In a new direction, looking to a brighter future. This is why the design is inspired by a sundial ”, explains Wilde Hollywood journalist by email. “Starling was the perfect partner for this, as they really advance sustainability in the jewelry industry in remarkable ways, focusing on circularity and transparency. “
The 37-year-old actor and director (who is set to direct a female-focused Marvel movie) says she and Burchfield have been “very involved in the entire design process from day one.” Starling founder Chelsey [Bartrum], helped us understand what sustainability in jewelry really means and taught us how to melt metals (gold and silver) and source from recycled diamonds. Together, we have designed every detail, including the placement of each diamond.
Of course, there is a charitable element: the proceeds from the equipment will benefit the Saint-Luc Foundation for Haiti, which provides pandemic relief and reconstruction after the country’s last earthquake.
Wilde and Burchfield first met in 2009 when they volunteered in Haiti on a transformative journey that led the actress to later co-found the country’s first free high school. In 2014, they co-founded their collaborative organization, Conscious Commerce, which partners with brands and non-profit foundations to develop more socially responsible business models. Past fashion and beauty collaborations have included H&M, ThredUp, Alternative Apparel, Anthropologie, Council of Fashion Designers of America, Organize.org, Thrive Market, True Botanicals, among many other brands and organizations at non-profit. (The company’s website is in the process of being redesigned and will be relaunched in the near future.)
For Starling, the Conscious Commerce collaboration marks her second collaboration with a Hollywood star. The brand teamed up with Melissa McCarthy last year on beaded rose quartz bracelets linked to her film, Starling.
Fresh out of the making Don’t worry darling (in which she co-stars with Gemma Chan, Chris Pine, Florence Pugh and Harry Styles), the busy star was most recently in post-apocalyptic comedy, How it ends, with Zoe Lister-Jones, Whitney Cummings and Cailee Spaeny.
Going forward, Wilde reveals what she and Burchfield enjoyed working with the sustainable jewelry label, what she hopes to receive for the holidays, and what it was like working on the highly anticipated Hollywood-inspired film. , Babylon. How did you connect with Babs at Starling and what did you like about working with the brand?
We connected with Chelsey out of a love for jewelry and a desire to better understand what sustainability means in jewelry. We asked ourselves questions such as “How do we keep stones and metal in service?” “,” What can we do with stones from an old piece that we may no longer wear because our style has changed? “,” What certifications should we be looking for? “
Our conversations have evolved into how jewelry is meant to be something we hold onto, which truly is the epitome of durability. Many products claim durability, but our charm has the certifications to prove it.
Given your incredible history of activism in Haiti, we are aware that you have experienced and seen many uplifting and heartbreaking scenes. As you reflect on your more than ten years of working there, what keeps you optimistic for the future even as the country faces the effects of another tragic earthquake?
The people. The people we met in Haiti taught me that optimism is a luxury for those of us who are lucky enough to be alive.
Besides Starling jewelry, what gifts do you give to your loved ones on this holiday?
Experiences. Time together. It is the greatest gift we have.
What gifts (whether tangible or not) do you hope to receive this year?
Time with the people I love.
What can you tell us about what it was like working on the next Hollywood-inspired movie? Babylon movie?
Damien Chazelle creates something extraordinary and ambitious and it was a pleasure to see him work.
What other Hollywood projects are you looking forward to?
My next movie, Perfect. I’m in the early stages of preparation now and it’s going to be really exciting.
